Have you noticed the cluster of tents that has been in pioneer park for the last two weeks? Its a radical encampment called Occupy SLC. I wont try to explain it here, visit their site, or better yet, go down there and get involved!

Radical Herbalism Workshop!

We had a phenomenal Herbalism workshop on august 5th at noon. Claudia and Megan (from california) are touring the country doing workshops. They taught us all about the timeline of herbal medicine and its relation to oppression and the sticky situation we find ourselves in now with that whole industrial civilization mess that is part of most moments of our lives. They also made a topical salve for cuts, burns, infections, or and other applications, right in front of us, and entirely out plants that grow locally.

The workshop was well attended and well structured, and took place at Boing! house. We want to organize more events like this one, so touring teachers and local folks, please give a shout out if you have any ideas or propostions. And check out these pics!

Kombucha class canceled

Hey folks,
I am headed out of town, so I will not be able to teach the kombucha class this monday. I am open to teaching and distrubuting mother cultures, and doing a little workshop another time, or letting someone else handle this one… post in the comments section if ya wanna do something like that.
We can do another kombucha class for our next period if folks are interested- just let me know.

Calendar

We have published a calendar for june/ july and it is out and about on bulletin boards, and on zine shelves at business all over Salt Lake City! Feel free to copy versions for yourself, friends, businesses, etc. The Calendar on the website has been updated too, and is now a google calendar rather than localcalendar because we haven’t been able to retrieve the password and account info for the localcalendar account.

‘Summer Break’ and apologies

Hey folks,
We are on summer break for the month of may, but there will be a planning meeting the june/july calendar this thursday, may 12th at 3:00 at Free Speech Zone (800e, 408 s.). Bring any ideas, we will be talking about classes, events and schedule for the upcoming session; taking up distribution of calendars; and generally talking about the way the free school is run and how we can expand and improve it. Bring food and friends, and call with any questions: 801-856-0535 (ask for Matt).
Secondly, part of the reason for our short summer break is a shift in coordinating responsibilities. James may still be our resident web manager, but Matt DP is now the person to call or email with general inquiries: 801-856-0535, repliroid2@yahoo.com.
Please let us any where James info is still listed as general coordinator, as Matt is still learning to use the website functions.
As such, editing and updates are a little behind schedule, and classes are still listed as going on this month. Contact individual teachers in regards to whether or not classes are occurring. Food Not Bombs will be happening regardless of AL’s schedule, and so will Yoga I believe.

Hey everyone!

I want to let you know that I am organizing a meeting where anyone who wants to, especially including you, can get together and plan out the next period’s calendar! The next period will be the January and February 2011 calendar.
Things that will be included in this planning are as follows, but not limited to these things:

Class topics and their subject matter (What do you have an interest in seeing on the calendar? Or what do you have an interest in at all? Maybe we can make it a class…)
Available locations for classes/events, and where to hold each one
The calendar’s artwork and layout
Where to be distributing the calendar
Free School WEBSITE

And it’d be a good excuse to all get together and meet one another, have some refreshments and enjoy each other’s company.

The tentative date for this meeting is

7 PM

Please let me know if you would like to come. If Dec. 9th is not a good day for you to attend, we can maybe work out another date. It’s obviously not too late to think about doing that.

Ah, freeschoolers! We fear we have been neglecting you these past few months… The website lacks updates and the paper calendars lack steady dispersal. But do not fret, the free school is not dying out, oh no, merely napping. …please look forward to more as we wake up and begin to stretch our bones…

With summer upon us, we’ll be taking it easy on our Free School Schedule, but you’ll still find useful classes and events happening through July and August, our upcoming period. Please look for the calendars in local businesses all around town in early July!

Hey y’all! We’re now collecting ideas for new classes to begin in the May and June period for Always Learning SLC! That means, if YOU have an idea for a free class, email us! It definitely helps if you also have an idea for basic needs too. Like….

1) Where and how often can the class happen?

2) Who can or will teach it?

3) Can it still be free and open to the public?

Consider the flood gates open! We can’t wait to hear from you!

YOGA not happening on Mon and Fri mornings, BUT there is a Wednesday class!

Hey there! So to clarify, Flavia, one of our instructors, is injured and therefore, can’t teach Yoga at the Temple of Doom on Monday and Friday mornings. HOWEVER, our other instructor, Jennica, is able to do a class for the following 3 Wednesdays at the Downtown Library (210 E. 400 S.), downstairs in Room A, right at the bottom of the stairs in the Library’s Main Entrance Hall.

So, that’s March 24th, April 1st, and April 8th! It starts at 9 am sharp still! We’d love to see you there!
